I think that "modern day witch hunts" or "scarlet letters" are seen throughout society today, but not as extreme or punishing as in the days when they were introduced. I think that we label people, judge, and express dark parts that are not naturally apart of us. I think that in the world today there are many issues such as same-sex attraction, liberal views, etc. We are all created differently, but equally, and I think that because we are all different we wont agree entirely with the people around us, but that doesn't mean that we can't love and accept THEM. We are all traveling down different paths in life and we can't judge the other person for walking on their path because we ourselves have not forgone the journey on that specific path. Now that I think about it, I don't think people judge others for things which they personally have done or gone through, but they only judge people whose path's are unfamiliar, unrecognized or untraveled by them.

Dear Arthur Dimmesdale,
I have been very impressed with the choices that you have made. I have been forced to bear the burden of the scarlet letter, but thou hast taken upon thyself, with courage, the weight of this sin, not by force, but by choice. I do not know what I would have done if I were in your shoes. It is interesting how our different experiences have led us to grow in different ways. The different perspectives we have gained from our different circumstances in the same sin we share have changed us two people in so different a way as though we did not commit the same fault. I know that it has been a hard time, but I'm glad that even though we had to take the consequences of this sin in different ways, we have been able to overcome and find strength to do so in each other. You have truly overcome this sin by being open to the public about it and you will be able to heal quicker now that you have taken action. (Would have been delivered if there was time before his death). -Hester Prynne Shame
A human recognized feeling that drives the soul into the darkest and deepest part of their heart. Brings fiery, piercing of self-torment and causes them to bow their head under the heaviest realization of deeds. Shame causes one to hide a part of themselves from the world and creates a mental cause of pain by reflection of a certain deed or an accumulation of deeds. If I could smell shame, it would be the burning scent of cinnamon which, when smelt too closely or too much, can damage and burn relentlessly. Shame would be the bitter taste of thyme dipped in saltwater. No taste but an unpleasant sensation unnatural to other normal human sensations. If I could see shame, I would see a forest deprived of light or surrounded by darkness with no prospects of hope or ability to find any there. If I could hear shame, it would be the gloomy silence in a deserted area. If I could touch shame, it would be the cold surface of ice or anything frozen; something that has the ability to change but remains cold and unwanted in the moment. |
